Ms. McCarthy’s class

Roberta O Brien

admin : February 18, 2019 11:39 am : Ms. McCarthy

We are learning about Roberta O Brien. She was from Tipperary. She was the first female commander in Ireland. She took command of the LE Aisling at a ceremony in Galway in November 2008. She was 31 years old. Her grandfather and uncle were members of the Naval Service which she joined as a cadet in 1995. Her brother and sister are serving in the army and she is married to an army officer. When Roberta joined the Navy she opted for being a deck officer rather than an engineer, so that she could one day command a ship.

The first, second, third and fourth classes went to the girls school to learn about road safety. We had to pass a safety course and then we received a safety licence. The course was to laid out on a play road in the hall. Some boys were on play bikes, play cars and some were pedestrians. There was a Garda directing us and telling us what to do. The pedestrians used zebra crossings. After the course the Garda talked to us about the importance of road safety and we all got our safety lincences.

Over the past couple of weeks the boys have been working hard to gather as many shoeboxes, filled with some Christmas gifts, for those in need for Team Hope’s annual appeal. The boys (and their parents!) have done so well and have collected an amazing 120 boxes to be sent to those in need this Christmas. It was a brilliant effort by everyone involved and all your efforts are hugely appreciated. Well done all!

New G.P. Hall

This year the school has begun work on a new general purpose room for the school. We have not received any funds from the Department of Education and Skills and so the project will be entirely self funded. This, needless to say, will be a huge undertaking, but is necessary as the school is in desperate need of a suitable hall for school activities and classes. This will require a huge fundraising effort and so we hope the whole school community can get involved over the coming months. Our fundraising begins with our Golf Classic event, hosted by Loughrea Golf Club from the 12th to the 15th of September. All are welcome to take part and all support greatly appreciated.
The 3D images below are renderings of what our finished hall will look like from the outside. It will certainly be a huge addition to the school!
