Me, Molser

admin : January 12, 2016 1:52 pm : Blog, Mr. MacLochlainn, Ms. Mahoney, News

On the 12th of January the 5th and 6th class boys went to St. Ita’s hall to see a play called Me, Molser by the Abbey Theatre. The play is an adaptation of the Seán O Casey play, The Plough and the Stars, and tells of what life was like for a young girl named Molser who was alive for the 1916 rising. It tells of the difficulties of dealing with consumption, which she suffered from, the problems caused by the rising, what life in the tenements was like and how tough life in general was for people of that time.
The play was done through a monologue which was brilliantly performed Elisia.
The boys learned lots of new information about life during that time and some of the incidents in the lead up to the rising, such as the workers lockout of 1913.
A very enjoyable trip!

The Peace Proms

admin : December 4, 2015 12:48 am : Mr. MacLochlainn, Mr. Monahan, Ms. Mahoney, News, Uncategorized

This year some boys from the choir are lucky enough to be invited to take part in The Peace Proms initiative. This involves singing with other schools accompanied by the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland. This orchestra have played all over the world including places like Carnagie Hall in New York and The Royal Albert Hall in London as well as Áras an Uachtarán and Dublin Castle for people like Queen Elizabeth II and President Higgins. The boys have been hard at work learning a whole host of new songs in preparation and had their first rehearsal on Wednesday in Leisure Land in Galway. Altogether there were 699 students there from different schools from Galway and beyond. All these students will come together along with the CBOI orchestra on the 31st of January at 2pm for a concert. It promises to be a brilliant event and one the boys are very lucky to be a part of.

The boys still have work to do learning off all the words and the dance moves to go with them so to give them a helping hand all the songs and the words can be found on the new Peace Proms page.

For anyone wishing to book tickets they can only be bought online on the Peace Proms website which you can visit by clicking here

For a little taster from their very first rehearsal visit our video page and have a listen!!

Ceolchoirm Abair Amhráin

admin : December 3, 2015 9:58 pm : Mr. MacLochlainn, News

The 6th class pupils took part in a collaborative music project as gaeilge in the Lough Rea Hotel last Thursday evening. As part of the project, run by Gaeilge Locha Riach, the boys learned 6 Irish songs which they then performed with 7 other schools and a small orchestra. The boys worked really hard at learning all the songs and even had a verse or two to sing on their own. All together there were 240 school children there from 8 schools in the area. It was a great success with a large crowd turning up to listen to the concert. Something for the boys to be very proud of!

Portumna Workhouse Visit

admin : November 17, 2015 9:35 am : Mr. MacLochlainn

In history we were learning about some old buildings in our area. We visited the cathedral and took a walk down to the old workhouse in Loughrea and listened to Mr Monahan talk about the cranógs. Then we decided to go visit Portumna Workhouse. Aaron brought us around the workhouse and told all kinds of interesting things. We got to see where the people in the workhouse ate, slept, were punished and even where they went to the toilet!! Click Here to see some pictures of the trip.
