On the 1st of December soldiers from the Irish army barracks at Athlone visited the school on a very important task.To commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Rising and to celebrate 100 years since the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, the Government has tasked Óglaigh na hÉireann with delivering a National Flag to every Primary School in the country. They spoke with the boys about taking care of the flag properly and also presented them with a copy of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, a paragraph of which was read by the oldest boy in the school Tiernan Killeen. Our youngest pupil, Shane McGrath, received the flag on behalf of the school. The boys gave a guard of honour to the soldiers as they arrived and sang Amhráin na bhFiann to send the soldiers on their way. This special flag will be raised on the 15th of March 2016 along with every other school in the country on Proclamation Day. For photos of the visit click here or visit our gallery
